PIGS ON TURNIPS.

A somewhat novel experiment is being Iriod with turnips in Ashbur'.nn District by Mr iVax "Friedlander at hi* farm ai Lyndhimt. Ho is feeding off a small paddock of turnips with about 150 young pigs and breeding sows, and the experiment so far seems to be a complete success. His plan is to fence off an acre at a time wiih strong cheep-netting, making n bit of ft rough with straw and slabs for tbe pigs to get into at night. When I saw them the pigs bad just finished their first break, upon which they bad boon a month. They bad cleared every root and weed oat of the land, and were looking in first-class health and condition. Mr Prindlnnder estimates thai in this way pigs can be reared until they era four months o'd, at a cost of not more than a penny per head per wpek. and by growing «om» peas fr) finish them off with, small farmers could make a very sofa nnd j jr.titibie turnover, and at the came time \ improve tbeir land.

FEEDING COWS WITH MILK

Mr James Dickson-Wnern writes to the Australasian :• —" An important discovery as regaids the use of the skim milk has recently been made in Sweden. From the last Swedish papers I learn that Mr A. Linstrom (a large estate owner) ha*, after many years' experiments, succeeded in taming the skim milk from the dairy to feed for the milking cows. Mr Linstrom fonnd that by giving the skim milk to the pigs or making chesse he couid not get more than half ore to 1-| ore ( J-jL ore equal Id) per kilogramme (1 kilogramme equal 2£lb), but by feeding tho skim milk to. the cows he got a return el 5 ore a kilogramme. This has been proved on Mr Linstrom's estate for more than a year, and the Swedish papeis calculate that the discovery will bring Sweden in more than a mjllion pounds sterling in a year. Well, Sir, it it brings Sweden in more than a million a year it ought, to be worth something to the Australian colonies. The preparation of the skim milk for feed is as follows :—The skim milk is pasteurised, then some rennet is added, and this is mixed with chaff. The mixture is left tor forty five to forty-eight hours to get sour, and is then ready lor feed. I have written home to get the exact quantities of tho mixture, and when I get it I will not fail to give you the result- I trust this will be of interest to your many readers.'"
