CHEVIOT.
A representative of the Christchurch Presi, who haß paid a visit to the Cheviot estate, describes the cultivation he saw, and discusses the question of the settlers' prospects for the future. Speaking of these who occupy the pastoral country or the farms of, say, 100 acres or over, it appears, he says, that they are generally satisfied with their lot. There will, of course, be some failures. Men hare taken op sections Who hare no previous experience to guide them ; others have insufficient capital, and others again neither capital nor experience. Farming on Cheviot will be no easy matter ; a fair amount of capital, according to the siae of the section taken up, some_nowledge of agricultural matters', and a determination to succeed, are essential. The distance from a market, and ithe extra cost of necessities will add to the difficulties of their lot. The low price of wool had upset their calculations, and; many of them are now becoming rather short of cash. -' How they will weather the coming year remains to be seen. Those who have pot in pats and obtained good crops should do fairly Well out of them.. Cattle should, at present prices, be profitable; and as a cheese factory is about to be established on the estate, there should be a demand for cows next season. On all hands it is agreed that the Government made a mistake in not reserving more of the road work, to be done by those who have taken up land at the Cheviot. It would have ; been an assistance to them at a bime when they most needed it, and would have helped them to tide over that period which must elapse before their t nag are brought into a, state of cultivation which will yield them fuller profits.
