POLITICAL.

[By Telegraph.]

[From our own Correspondent.]

Wellington, July 21.

The House this afternoon spent a considerable time over a motion from the Opposition to send a return back to the Treasury Department for fuller information. On a division the motion was rejected by 38 to 23. The Bryce episode has advanced another stage. The Public Petitions Committee sat this morniDg, heard Mr Bryce and adjourned further consideration until to.morrow. In connection with this case there is a motion on the order paper to be moved by the Hon. W. P. Reeves in tl« following words:—"That in view ci the eminent services rendered to the Colony by members, now no longer members of this House, it is not expedient to retain n permanent record of votes of regret or censure passed at v-arious times with respect to each of them for unparliamentary language used in the heat of debate or for disobedience, the chair and this House therefore direct that the entries in the journals of the date mentioned be now expunged, that is to say as to Mr H. E. Curtis, 12th July, 1856, as to Mr Vincent Pyke, 14th September, 1876, as to the Hon. J. D. Ormond, 13th Nov. 1877, as to the Hon. W. Gisborne, 2nd Sept. 1881, as to the Hon. Sir Julius Vogel, 16th Nov. 1887, as to the Hon. John Bryce, 27th August, 1891." The question on the order paper for to-day is postponed until to-morrow to enable some private members to get their bills through this afternoon. The Wanganui Hospital Board Bill, and the Wellington City Sanitary Loan Bill sailed through committee, reported therefrom without amendments and passed third reading, but the second reading of the Wairarapa Hospital Bill which had been ««talked out" at a previous private members'day, again met with opposition, and the dinner adjournment arrived before a division could be taken. I think the galleries will be crowded tonight, as it is understood that Mr Scobie Mackenzie wi'l have the floor at 7.30 p.m., and be will be followed by the Minister cf Education. As I predicted last wpek, there is no doubt but that the Financial debate will run through till the end of next week.
