AKAROA BOROUGH SCHOOL.
A meeting of this School Committee was held last night. Present—Messrs* Armstrong (Chairman), Penrose, E. F. Lelievre, Weste&ra, J. Punnell and Hayward. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Accounts were read lrom Mr Walker, £1 7s 6d ; Mr Jacobson, 10s ; Mr Mitchej), £2. The accounts as read were passed for payment. Rβ children's prizee, Mr Westenra said that books had been procured from the Bib'e Tract Society for prizes, at a low rate, and he thought this course might to be pursued if members would each canvass a locality, prizes given for first prize at end of each term, and more at the Xmas occasion. Mr Penrose thought it wiser to give prizes at the end of each term. It was resolved to canvass the district for funds towards the children's prize fund. Mr Funriell said that the grounds might be* kept right at 25s per aunum. Mr Westenra said he had visited thsschoo, and found it in good order. ' It was resolved Mr Mitchell be empowered tcT keep ground in order at 25s per annum. Districts to canvass were allotted as follows :—Balguerie street, Mr &. Westenra ; Lavaud street and Jolie street North, Mr Hayward j Beach Road, Mr E. F, Lelievre; Jo'ie street, Mr Penrose; G. Armstrong , , jun., Ay liner's Valley ; tGreban Valley, Mr J. Funnell ; rest of' the town, Mr Penlington. Mr Me Gregor waited on the School Comruittee by appointment re Arbor Day, and after discussion was decided a holiday should be granted, to the children on the last Friday in July, in order that it might be proclaimed an Arbor Day for the planting of trees and consequent beautifying of* $he locality.
