Christchurch, Feb. 16.

At the opening of the Resident Magistrates Court this morning Mr R. Beetham spoke in the most feeling terms with reference to the decease of the late Mr Caleb Whitefoord, paying a high tribute to the work of the deceased gentleman as an administrator of justice, a citizen, and a man. Mr Weston on behalf of the bar also paid a tribute of respect to the memory of the deceased, and alluded to the high respect in which Mr Whitefoord was held by all those who practised before him. Blenheim, Feb. 16. old chief, Sir Wm. Fitzherbert, keenly. Mr Bunny committed snicide between noon and 7.30 p.m. yesterday. At 11.45 a.m. Mr Bunny asked Constable Smith of Featherston where he could get the key of the Board Office. On being informed deceased went as directed, having refused the constable's ofler to get it for him. At 7.30, David Ryan, Mr Bunny's servant, came and inq-iired for him, stating he had not been home since morning. Constable Smith ascertained that the key bad not been returned, and with Ryan went to the office and found Mr Bunny sitting in a chair dead and cold. The front of his coat was open, and a shot wound over his heart. A small five chambered revolver was lying on the floor, and two cartridges apparently recently discharged. His attitude was peaceful, and showed that death took place without a struggle. No one in the neighborhood had heard the shot. The only particular so far are that he had refreshments in the hotel yesterday morning, and then borrowed the key of the Council Chambers, eat in a chair and shot himself through the stomach.

The Telegraph's special at Hawera says each side is confident of winning the election to-morrow. The Hon. J. McKenzie, Minister ot Lands, spoke at Manaia on Saturday eveuing in support ot Mr McGuire, and Messrs Hutcuinson and Smith in the same interest at Inglewood. Che Hon. Mr Seddon arrived in Hawera on Saturday, and speaks to-night. Messrs Hutchinson and Smith will hold a meeting at Stratford to-night, and Mr McKenzie has gone over to the Wairnate Plains as far as Opunaki. Mr Bruce had a good meeting at Hawera on Saturday evening, and there was a sympathetic audience. He complained bitterly of the tactics of Ministers in rushing up and down the district working and speaking, and making promises against him. He stated that they had arranged their meetings so as to shut him out from all opportunity of replying to their speeches. Mr Bryce has just arrived, in Hawera, and Messrs Lawry and flarkness, M.H R.s, are in the district. Egment has seldom had so many Parliamentary men within its boundaries, and certainly has never seen them so active before, Romb, Feb. 15th. Cardinal Sucido Parocochi, Vicar General to his Holiness the Pope, has been detected intriguing to secure his succession te the Papacy. London, Feb. 15. JVXajor Broomhead, one of the heroes of Rorke's drift, is dead. Washington, Feb. 15. Admiral Porter, Commander of United States Navj, is dead.
