The Akaroa Mail FRIDAY, DECEMBER 5, 1890.

The Election.—The election takes place to-day, and it is to be hoped that every elector who can will exercise his privileges. We shall issue extras to-night, giving result of elections all over the colony as far as possible. Mr. Montgomery.—Our esteemed friend and late member, Mr Montgomery, is at present on a visit to the Peninsula. Hospital and Charitable Aid Boards. —At the annual meeting Mr Westenra was re-elected Chairman ot the Charitable Aid Board, and Mr W, D. Wood Chairman of the Hospital Board. Accident.—We regret to hear that Mr Whitfield, Chairman of the Akaroa and Wainui Road Board, has been knocked down by a bull, and received very painful, but, we are glad to record, not serious injuries. Southern Provinces Almanac, 1891. — We have received our usual copy of this very useful and interesting publication, which contains the customary large amount of information, o( which we ourselves make frequent use. Copies are to be obtained from MrNoonan. Akaroa Hospital.—ln the annual report of the Hospital Board read to that Board on Wednesday it was stated that the Akaroa Cottage Hospital has been carried on very effectively and was ot much benefit to that district. This shows the care and attention taken in the work of the hospital by Mr and Mrs Penrose.

Akaroa Borough School.—A meeting rf the Committee was held on Tuesday evening. Present—Messrs Dodds (Chairman), Henning, Staples, Vangioni, Wright, and Penrose. The minutes were confirmed, and accounts amounting to £5 3s 3d were passed for payment. Messrs Noonan and Penrose were appointed Visiting Committee for the month, and the Chairman stated that it was intended to enter seven of the children for the High School scholarships. Correspondence was read from Board ot Education re books to be USed in SChOOI, and appointment and resignation of teachers. Mr Vangioni, as one of the former Visiting Committee, reported he had found the school in good order when he had visited it. The Chairman announced the school concert would be held on the qth, and it was arranged the tickets should be the same as last year. Mcssts Penrose, Henning, Staples, and Vangioni promised their assistance at the concert. It was arranged the holidays should be six weeks, commencing on December I2th. Mr Penrose apologised for the absence of Mr Noonan through illness. It was decided to charge Post Office 4/-, halfcost of cleansing drain running from joint premises. The Committee then adjourned.

LATE CABLE News.—lt is reported that Mr Parnell intends to reveal the relations which existed between himself and the Gladstone party, unless Air Gladstone admits the accuracy of his (Mr Parnell's) account respecting the Home Rule proposals. —The Press generally accept Messrs Gladstone and Morley's denial of Mr Parnell's manifesto, and demand that Mr Gladstone's version of the Hawarden proposals should be accepted as a secernent of nis present intentions.—A terrible tragedy took place near Doyleiord. A man named Avison. suspecting his wife of infidelity, returned home unexpectedly, and found her paramour, a man named Hoare, in the house. Avison attacked him savagely with a tomahawk, which he drove several times into his head, and was only prevented from killing his wife by the intervention of a friend. Hoare is dying.—lt is asserted that Dixon's American lymph is identical with Dr. Koch's.—O'Donovan Rossa has filed a petition in bankruptcy.—The Canadian Government proposes to allow manufacturing in bond, admitting raw material free for the purpose of being made up and exported —A rich belt of auriferous countrj has been proved on the Umfali, river South Africa.—The s.s., Ethiopia one of the Allan Atlantic liners, is now five days overdue from New York, to London, and fears are felt for her safety. She has one hundred and forty passengers on board.— Owing to large and destructive bush fires and the ravages of rabbits, a number of squatters have been compelled to throw up their runs in New "■" mth Wales.—Midwinter, the well-, knowr Victorian cricketer, is dead.—The Tithes Bill has passed its second reading in the House of Commons by a large majority. The Opposition leaders abstained from voting.— Excited meetings have been held at Cork, at which cries were raised of, " Gladstone is a slippery devil." and both Gladstone and Morley were hissed. Partisans of Parnell shouted, " To hell with Dillon, O'Brien and Davitt." The Dublin National League is almost unanimous in favor of Mr Parnell; a priest seconded a vote of confidence in him. —The London Leagues have unanimously declared in favor ot Mr Parnell. The branches at Glasgow and Liverpool are divided in the matter, but many leading branches in Ireland are in favor of Mr Parnell retaining the leader-ship.--At the meeting of the Irish party yesterday, Mr Parnell declared that no member of Mr Gladstone's party was to be trusted, and Mr Gladstone himself was a garrulous old gentlemen. Mr Parnell accused a certain section, including Messrs Sexton and Healey, of conspiring with Messrs Labouchere and. James Stuart to'oust him from the leadership. In the course of his remarks, he also accused, Mr Gladstone of provoking the present situation of affairs, and called him a " leader killer," who had stabbed the late Isaac Butt in the back.
