VERSES ADDRESSED TO A SEA BIRD WHICH j AD BEEN SHOT. Hail bird of ocean, thou whose sinewy wing Has travelled widely o’er the blue seas foam, Like the bright herald of serial king, And the wide sea and land thy home. The calm is uot for thee, thou wandering bird, Nor th * fair summer sky serene and bright, But the wild scene where boistrous winds are heard, And the white crested waves th’ere thy delight. Oft bast tliou halted on the towering mast. When the day faded into darkening night, Thea spread thy wings on the imperious blast, And to far distant shores pursued thy flight. And thou hast floated where the struggling bark, Vainly contended with the ocean drear, And as she sank in the rude waves deep and dark, Tne wild shriek of death assailed thine car. But thy strong ’pinions shall extend no more, Over the wide ocean rolling dark and deep, But thou must rest on this deserted shore, Forso k by all save the rude billow’s sweep. Thy sinewy wings by death’s cold hand are chained, They that have borne thee over field and flood, Thy Miowy plumage now Is soiled and stained, By the bright effluence of thy crimson blood. And thou art gone from all thy watery sport, And the rude winds which thy proud wings have fanned, Shall sing thy n qniem in this lone resort, When thou art mouldering on tbe cold -sea Sind. Meet resting place for thee, thou wandering bird, Thou that hast floated on the luud wind's breath Thy lone retreat shall never more be aiirred, ’Twas thy delight in life and ’tis (by Iwme in death.
