HIS HOLINESS versus ITALIAN INDEPENDENCE.

While within the new kingdom of Italy all is harmony and activity, without all is confusion and alarm. A fearful insurrection has broken out in Sicily, and although the “ authorities” have beaten it down by sheer force of artillery, the resistance was formidable and intrepid, and the spirit in which it originated is as fierce a-ss before. The young King of Naples, reduced to a state of frenzy or of mortal fear, it is not easy to determine which, is carrying his reign of terror to so fearful a height that all friendly remonstrances are thrown away upon him, and the total collapse of his dynasty is the only issues-it is possible to foresee. In Rome matters are quite, as bad. The students again broke- out on- the advent efi Giribaldi’s day, and succeeded in making a demonstration in. favor of annexation to Piedmont. On a subsequent occasion a horrible butchery of the Romans on the Corso by the Pontifical troops took place-under circumstances which have awakened an universal feeling of disgust throughout Europe, and greatly diminished the chances of a peaceful settlement of the Holy See. The approaching withdrawal of the French-troops-will, probably, be the signal for such a burst of popular execration as Rome never before witnessed. It 'seems that the Pope is preparing an army of his own to supply the place of the French, and that General Lamorici&re has undertaken the command of the new levies. This last fact is the only one that is known for certain, the policy of the Vatican being involved in a mist which even, the cardinals themselves cannot always penetrate.— Home News, April 18-.
