TO THE (nonest) HERO OF TARANAKI
Thou hero of many battles fought!
Who dare question thy skill, or ought; The strongholds taken by thy command, Must gain the savage praises of the land. Great thou art, and as Don Quixote bold ; Tales of thy warfare will e’ere be told ; New Zealand’s history will hand down Thy name to wear a mortal crown. Long will “ savage gentlemen” revere thy name, Tho’ empty pahs are not the road to fame. The battles that this land may raise A re-not des tined to win thee praise. By some thou art “Old Woman” y’clept— Better thy military taste had slept, Or the South Atlantic you ne’er did pass, Than be so styled—“ Keep off the grass I” Some may yet tt’fir thy misfortunes weep, When in a wafHor’s grave tho-u’lt sleep. Others at thy generalship may laugh, But I will write- thine Epitaph. I>. -R.
