MR. FIRTH ON THE AUCKLAND PRESS.

(To Editor of Auckland Examinex.) Sir, —In your issue of Wednesday last, 1 observed an article ou some remarks lam reported to have made in a speech at the public meeting of May 19th, respecting the press of this city not having done its duty with reference to the present war with the rebel maories. You say that the “Examiner” has been Outspoken, and that I ought to have said so. Permit me to say that, my great object hns been to set the people of England right, with regard to the position occupied by the colonists of this Island in this matter With this view I said, that if the press had done its duty there would have been less occasion for the public Meeting and the petition to the Queen. I spoke only of the “ New Zealander ” and Southern Cross,” as old established journals, and therefore most likely to have a homo circulation. Every one here knows that both uie “Examiner” and “Register” have throughout taken a manly and straightforward coursenut being much younger journals than these alluded to, I did not suppose they had a orne circulation sufficient to operate upon Public opinion in England. Without cotnmittlng myself to extreme opinions, I may truly that no one admits their fearless attitude m °re readily than myself, or would more sincerely regret that any remarks of mine should eV( n appear to do them injsutice might indeed have added tho words a porlo,‘ of the press I —Put down my not having otl c so, to forgetfulness. Yours &c., T J. C, Firth. Juno 7th, iB6O.
