On the first day the totalisator handled £6085 compared with £2573/10 in 1941; on the second day £9210 was put through the machine. Gate takings amounted to £97/5 on the first day and £220 on the second. Mr W. Jones made an efficient job at the barrier. The Wellington Racing Club will conclude their Autumn meeting on Saturday.
Foxhaven came with a great late run in the Autumn Hep. and better placed in the early stages would have been the probable winner Foxhaven was ridden a similar race on the opening day of the January meeting and improved to secure a narrow verdict over Bruce on the second day. In his present form Foxhaven should be one of the brightest prospects on Saturday.
Master Dash and Irish Note were responsible for a wonderful effort to secure the minor places in the Thompson Hep. Neither were favoured by the luck of the running which made their efforts all the more, noteworthy.
The two above-named horses are unquestionably two of the best milers seen in recent years and a straight out contest between them and Exeter the Auckland champion, would arouse great interest.
Dierene surprised bv beating all but Exeter in the Challenge Stakes and should be a good winner'while the tracks stay firm.
Specialist who ran third to Grill and Patmos after receiving a poor run had been showing good form prior to this event. Specialist was well supported on the totalisator and is one who is expected to run out of hack company in the near future.
Quite Happy was untroubled to win the final event at Timaru by a comfortable margin and should be a good prospect for the- Easter carnival at Addington.
Kuri who has shown a liking for the Trentham course ran a fine race in the Thompson Hep. after being one of the last to leave the barrier.
Freckles began very smartly in the Temuka Hep. and after trailing the leaders to the home bend came right away to win by a big margin. Freckles is a solid trotter on any type of track and should go on to more success in tighter classes.
Native Scott who gave a taste of his quality at the recent New Brighton meeting is in great order and should be one of the stars at the Easter meeting.
The record crowd which attended the Cromwell meeting should encourage the Club in shaping their future programmes. The meeting was an enjoyable one in every way and was conducted in a manner which left nothing to be desired
