NEW HALL
DISCUSSION BY COUNCIL At Monday night's meeting of Ihe Borough Council, Cr Russell brought up the question of the inadequacy of the Town Hall, and stated that at two recent functions people were crowded like sardines; he knew a new hall was under consideration but he felt that to. meet the position properly two halls would be needed and he thought that this was beyond the town's ability, he wondered whether the Council should not decide to improve the present hall. A suggestion had been made that the stage should be removed to the supper room and the supper room put on the side of the hall. He had an open mind over the whole but thought the} Council shouljd decide just' what they were going to do. Cr Sunderland said he thougjhjt that for many years the Council would not be able to support two halls. The Mayor said he thought something should be attempted—perhaps the side should be removed and pillars erected and the hall widened.. Cr Fox agreed too that this might be a way of helping the position. The Town Clerk said' he would like to point out that the Council actually lost money to let the hall for anythingj other than pictures, when the labour of shifting the seats was taken into account the Council actually lost money; he thought the town needejtl twoi halls. Cr Hern agreed ,re shifting the seats and urged the Council to get a roller to roll them, out on —this was agreed to. Cr Kinnaird also mentioned the bad state of the Hall for dust and urged that something be done to eliminate this nuisance. Eventually it was decided that the whole jCouncil would inspect the Hall and consider ways and means of improving the position generally.
