FIRE BRIGADE

At Monday nighitj's meeting of the Alexandra Borough Council, Crs Sunderland and McKissock reported upon attending the annual meeting of the Alexandra' Fire Brigade. Cr Sunderland said he had been very pleased to attend the meeting, the business of which had been carried out in a business like way. He said, unfortunately, the finances of the Brigade were in a rather bad way, having (implied the year •with only 13/11 credit balance. He said that lie and Cr Me Kissock had suggested to the meeting that the matter be referred tp the Council. Cr McKissock aJso spoke in complimentary terms of the efficiency of the Brigade and said another matter that had been discussed at the meeting was the honouring of members of the Brigade who had given up to 33 years of service to the town; he referred to the appeal made to the public two years ago when £35 had been collectedThe Mayor, who is a member of the Brigade, thanked the Councillors for their appreciative refer- [ ence to the work of the Brigade and said the Brigadcsmen were very impressed with the way the Councillors who attended had carried out their duties of installing the firemen. Crs Fox and Campbell bo'th spoke in complimentary terms of the work of the Brigade. Cr Fox said that a rate should be levied so that each ratepayer paid his due share. Cr Campbell also said he favoured a direct payment from the Council. Cr Russell said he had always been a great admirer of the. Brigade, he had attended a number of their functions and had thoroughly enjoyed them; he said the matter of honouring the firemen had been discussed previously but the question of what was the best thing to give the men had been the subject of much controversy and the war intervening; he thought it Was not too late yet to honour them, and to do it in a few month's time when the All Purposes Appeal was finished. Cr Hern said he was keenly interested in the work of the Brigade and to show his appreciation of their excellent services rendered he with his partners consent would put on a picture show for the BrigadeThe Mayor thanked Cr Hern for his very generous offer. Cr Russell then moved that the. Council's ddnation for the current year be raised to £25. Cr Kinnaird said he was very pleased to see something being done to help the Brigade and moved that a complimentary social be held in October for the five firemen in question and that Crs Sunderland, McKissock i and Russell be the Council's representatives to confer , with the Brigadesmen to arrange finality in the matter.—This was carried unanimously.
