PRACTICAL AGRICULTURE
THAINLNG IN 111011 SCHOOLS. The importance of the teaching of practical agriculture in country high schools was stressed by Mr E. C. Banks at a meeting of the Auckland Education Board. Objection was raised by Mr Banks to the appointment at the Matamata Junior High School of an assistant master, who, he stated, had no practical knowledge of farming. The position was advertised on the .basis of ability to teach the usual secondary subjects, including agriculture, general science and French. Mr Banks said much was heard of the need of training boys to go on farms, but to do this the instructor had to lie a person with practical qualifications. He understood that ten trainees with agricultural degrees would leave the Massey Agricultural College this year. This was the type of instructor required in every district high school. It was decided to postpone the appointment, pending information regarding the suitability of Massey and Lincoln College trainees.
