The secretary of the Duuedin Returned Soldiers' 'Association (Mr White) wrote regarding the. Poppy Day proceeds. He stated that only out-of-work returned soldiers were to be employed and the work done must be something that would be of advantage to the town such as tree planting, beautifying the streets or surroundings. A £ for £ subsidy was necessary. Just at present there is no necessity for the money as the returned soldiers who were out; of work have secured temporary employment. The land on the other side- of, the river was not within the borough. It would be establishing a prece/lent that might lead to endless trouble and the matter was riot favourable viewed by tlie councillors. However, it • was pointed out that for £3 per annum a light would be placed there by the Power Board.
Cr Hewitt asked - if anything had been done regarding the ,new borough by-laws. The Mayor said that two copies of the comprehensive set compiled by the Health Department were now, to hand and he hoped>that councillors would read them over and note anything which required altering. The general by-laws in this book were quite sufficient for this borough but additions and deletions were necessary. '
Or JV O'Kane «said that the back street behind the Power, Board right down to the back of Dpbbie's shop was a disgrace to' the town. The Mayor i asked the- Works' Committee to draw up a schedule of works to be put through during the next two years. The Finance Committee would then go into the cost arid report to the, next meeting of the Council. The matter of raising a loan to carry out the proposed works in the borough was a subject which would have to be seriously considered inJJie near future. The bank overdraft iivaa fairly-*'large' and still there were a number of improvements very necessary in" the borough. It was considered thst't' the money' which had been set aside for house building loan would not be interfered with. The. £4000; when returned will be let out in more housebuilding schemes.
, The -financial statement" was the"n taken, the Mayor moving the adoption' of same and the sum of £213 5s 9d was passed for payment. •■
