BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting was hold: on . Monday evening, "the sth TSjfeyT* , Present : His Worship the MfflL' also Councillors Brihgans, Ashwortfr, Oroft, Noble, W. Hewitt, Munro and , A. M'Kellar. The Mayor apologised ...,, for the absence of Cr Bagley on account '.'' of illness.

The minutes of last meeting.on. the motion of Cr Noble seconded by Cr Hewitt were duly confirmed,

Resolved that the inward correspondence be received and outward approved.

A letter from the dayman, Mr Hannay, was received, asking the council to allow him his full wages during his four weeks holiday. He drew the council's attention to the fact that he had been in their employ for 20 years and. inSfcbat time had only three holidays, and that he had not been paid overtime. On referring to the back minutes of the council, it was noted by the councillors that on January 21, 1921, Mr Hannay received a rise of 2s per day, bringing his wages up to 16s per day. Tho Mayor stated that a motor bike was now supplied to the dayman, and the Chat to Creek race being eliminated had improved the dayman's working conditions considerably. Statutory holidays the dayman had always been paid for. Reference was made by councillors to the working conditions of the dayman of neighbouring Boroughs, and that wages bad been reduced on the Public Works since Mr Hannay had received the 2s rise. After all the council had expressed their opinions, and reviewed theutfatter in all its phases, Cr Noble moved— That the council cannot see their way clear to accede to Mr Hannay's request.—Seconded by Or Hewitt and carried unanimously.

A requisition from thfe Fire Brigade to purchase, four helmets was agreed to on the motion of Or Munro, and seconded by Cr M'Kellar.

In regard to the request by .tisa residents across the Molyneux Bridge for a fire plug it was decided that council was prepared to put in a plulp provided the interested parties pay the cost.

la regard to the licensing fee of 10s for eating houses, it was moved by Or Ashwocth and seconded by Or Noble, that the report lie on the table. An amendment by Or Hewitt that the fee be 5s was seconded by Or M'Kellar. Five voted foir the amendment and two against. ' A general discussion in regard to the recutring trouble of persons making openings in the fence of the Reserve. This particularly occurring at the corner near the Anglican Church and midway between there and Tai bert street. Resolved to erect notices warning the offenders, and at - the same time to lequest the children • to. guard against damaging the grass plots.

Owners of overhanging hedges are requested to have same cut, so that they will not encroach on the footpath. Or M'Kellar brought up the question of the roads in the Borough, and it was decided that for the present the matter to stand oven The dayman to attend to the urgent requirements. The financial position showed £H3 17s credit in 8.N.Z., and accounts owing £BS 2s 9d, which were passed for payment.

A vote of thanks to the chair 'terminated the meeting.
