The death took place at Auckland recently of Mr Frederick James Burgess, late stipendiary magistrate. The deceased was a well-known Warden in the Otago Central districts in the busy times of the mining boom, twenty years ago, he having presided over the Warden's court of the district for a period oif fifteen to twenty years. He was an able War. den of whom old miners speak with respect. .■ *

At the meeting of the Presbyterian Synod of Qtago and Southland held in First Church, Dunedin, last week, the nomination of the Rev. J. Standring by the Presbytery of Dunstan as Moderator of the Synod for 1923 was accepted, and Mr Standnng was unanimously elected to the, office. We extend congratulations jfcoi Mr Standring on the honour., which has come his way. It is over a quarter of a century since a similar, honour was extended"to a minister of fche Alexan-dra-Clyde parish—the Rev J. Lothian in 1895.
