FIRE BRIGADE.

The annual meeting of tho Volunteer Fire Brigade was held iu Mrs Barry's tea rooms on Wednesday evening, 6th July. Captain G. H. Hannay presided over a full attendance of meinbois.

Tho chairman welcomed to the meeting Captain M'Leod ot the Mosgiel Brigade, the mayor (Mr W. Black) and Or W. Noble representing the borough council. Minutes oE the previous annual meeting having been read and adopted the annual report and balance sheet were submitted.

The mayor (Mr W, Black) in presenting certificates and bars for years of service, congratulated the brigade on the interest shown by tho members iu their brigade, many of whom had been associated with the Alexandra brigade for several years. To foreman Woodhouse, Fireman W. Carline senr. and W. Hewitt ho presented three years service certificates. Two years service bars were presented to Assist-ant-Foreman L. F. Sanders. A fireman on the completion of 5 years service receives a medal and for every additional 2 years of service he receives an additional bar. This bar •to Assistant-foreman Sanders represented 7 years of service, although including his time as a messenger, he has been attached to the local brigade longer than 7 years. To Captain Hannay and Lieutenant S. Carline were presented the third bars, representing 11 years service, and to Fireman A. Ash worth a sixth bar representing 17 years of set vice. Tho recipients acknowledged tho complimentary remarks of the mayor with brief speeches of thanks. A hearty vote of thanks was extended to the retiring officers. Fireman J. Sanders having been voted to the chair, the election of the officers for the ensuiug year was proceeded with and resulted as follows : Captain, W. Hewitt ; Lieutenant, J. •Carline ; Foreman G. 11. Hannay ; assistant-foreman, L. F. Sanders ; secretary, J. Padget. An excellent supper was served and enjoyed by all after which the meeting terminated.
