BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ■inuutbjy meeting of the Alexandra Borough Council was held on Monday, Ist December) the mayor W, Black) presided, Present: Crs. E. Marslin, W. Noble, H. Hull, A. Whittleston, C. Weaver, W- Bringans, G, Cauipboll. Minutes of last ordinary meeting read and confirmed. . —Correspondence.—■ Outward approved and inward received and dealt with as follows :
District Health Officer (Dunedin) sending report of Inspector Cameron re. oat break of diphtheria.—Received. Mayor intimated that since this report was made, a few more cases had occurred, and an inspector was presently in the town taking steps to try and find out the source -of the trouble.
Cromwell Borough Council asking tho council to support a resolution of protest re. the poor accommodation of the Otago Central trains, iu terms similar to that recently before tho Vincent County Council.—Unanimously agreed to support the resolution. Education Board (DuucJin) inquiring if tho council would be favourable to the oxchangelor sale of a certain section near the public school for the purpose of erectiug thereon tho proposed new Technical School buildings. Cr Campbell explained tho position a-d favoured the . council" selling the section askod for. Cr Marslin moved "That in event of Mr D. Tohill being agreeable, the council agree to make an exchange for another section of an equal area. I ' Seconded by Cr Weaver. Cr Campbell moved as an amendment " That the council sell tho section to the Educational Board, instead of exchanging.''—Secndcd by Cr Hull. The vote resulted; For the amendment—Cra Campbell, Hull (2); against— Crs Marslin, Weaver, Noble, Bringans, Whittleston (5).
Amendment lost. The motion was then carried unanimously. J. Johns (Alexandra) asking permission to log on rimmings* property.—Granted, all necessary precautions to be taken at his own riskAlexandra Volunteer Fire Brigade per J, Carline, secretary), inquiring) when new fire bell would be to hand.— Action had baen taken.
S. T. Spain (Alexandra) applyiug Cor special water supply for electric lighting purposes.—Granted. W. Noble (Alexandra), applying for an inch water service from Chatto Creek race to the ground lately fenced in by applicant.—Granted. Mrs J, B. Hull (Alexindra), making application for the hire of town hall for every Saturday evening for 12 mouths, with right of renewal at a sum of £.50 per annum. A. Anderson (Alexandra) on dehalf of the local Trotting Club, asking for the hire of the hail for Saturday, 10th December.
Both letters had been held over from last meeting. Cr Hull uwvej. " That the implication of tho Irotting Club bo granted." He had made an arrangement with the club for that uight. He asked why the hall could not be booked ahead.
Cr Marslin was of-the opinion that if the person booking the hall put down the price of the hire the clerk mast accopt same.
Cr Noble seconded Cr JEuli'd motion, which on being put was carried. After fully discussing the question of leasing the ball for Saturday nights for 12 months, tho arguments following along tho lines of the discussion lust month, Cr Campbell movod "That the council lease tho hall to Mrs Hull for every Saturday eveniug for 12 months with right of renewal with tho proviso that in the event of any local society wanting the hall on that evening, application must be made to the council." — Seconded by Cr Brigans.
Cr Whittleston moved as an amendment " Ttiat the hall bo leased to Mrs Hull in the terms of the request, and the council retain the right to eaucel the engagement for one night by giving one months' notice and the whole of, the contract to be cancelled by three mouths notice." —Seconded by Cr Woavor, The amendment was .lost. For: Crs Whittleston, "Weiver; against, Cts, Marslin, Campbell, Briagaus and Noble Cr Campbell's motion was. Thou put and oarried. Decided to impose the iO per cent penalty for rates unpail after ldfch January. Dog collars required, to be secured from Mr John Smart of Clyde. Next meeting of tho council to he postponed a week, from sth' to 12th January. ■ Cr Hull drew attention to the very bad condition of the hall. The floor, walls, and scenery being in a allocking condition, and would soon require considerable expense to repair the damage. Strong comment was made as to the amount of wilful damage being done to the scenery and wings, and to the misconduct which takes place at some socials. —No' "actionwwe,a e , however, taken to stop the nuisance.. 4. —Library Iteport.—-
Books issued during October 401 ; magazines 29 ; readers 99. This showed au increase of 50 books, jls magazines and 17 readers over the corresponding month of last year.-r-Mr W. Laidlaw generously donated a number of bioks to the library, for which a leUer of thanks was forwarded to the donor. Decided to recommend that Messrs WhiteJiabe and Tombs, Ltd., Dunedin be given a trial for the selection and supply of new books. Accounts animating to £79 7s 41 were passed for payment ; also the quarterly levy for the Vincent Hospital and Charitable Ail Board amounting to £3l Us 9d. ..'
