LAWYERS' AMAZING INCOMES.
Law is costly luxury. And woll it I might be for the ft nest profession in the | world from a money-making point of view i» the law. In a recent case Sir j Edward Carson and Sir John Simon had a trifling fee of five thousand guineas on their briofs, oach being assisted by a small army of juniors, who were paid in proportion. There are a round dozen leading lawyers who will, not read a brief without a preliminary fee of one thousand guineas, while a leader of minor omiuence now expects one hundred guineas on a brief aud twenty-five guineas a day as a refrosher. The Bar is the strongest trade union iu the country. Ic has forced legal iucomes up by leaps and bounds, as may be gathered from the fact thatJos.se), the one-time Master of the Rolls, looked upon a twenty-five guineas refresher as something exceptional, while Edwin James chronicled as extraordinary two hundred guineas on a brief when he was (he leading Queen's Counsel.
