Prison for Profiteers.
Mr C. 1 ; . Higham, M.P., expressed himself to a ' Daily Kxpress ' representative as dissatisfied with the replv "1 the H.oine Seeretarv to his question iu the House of Commons concerning the inadequate tines imposed bv magistrates in cases of profiteering in food. »
" I propose to carry this agitation further," said Mr Higham. " I Avaut to sec if some pressure cannot be brought to bear on magistrates, and I am going to press the Home Secretary ami the Food Ministry to impress on the magistrates how serious is this victimisation of the public, and especially of the poor people. During the past 30 days traders convicted of profiteering in Islington have been fined such ridiculous sums as is 6d and To impose fines like these is to put a premium on profiteering. In fairness to the traders who are patriotic and honest, the only remedy, in my opinion, is to imprison the offenders."
