THE CINEMA IN CENTRAL AFRICA

AN EDUCATIONAL EXPEDITION. What is most probably the most unique expedition of its kind is now travelling through Central Africa. Landing at Cape Town at the end of August, its mission is to penetrate the jungles of the Dark Continent. It is larger than that headed by the late Colonel Roosevelt when he went through the terra incognita of Southern America. A full cinema equipment was taken, with the intention of bringing back to America pictures for the educational campaign to he initiated by the United States tiovemment. The director of the

expedition is Mr Edmund Heller, of Washington. Heller is a famous scien- ! tist connected with the Smithsonian Institution, and, is an experienced explorer, havng been with Roosevelt on the lalter's 1912 expedition into Africa. Heller was al*o with Paul Ilainey when that explorer delved into East Africa. The Smithsonian Institution chose Henry C. Haven as field naturalist of the expedition. Raven spent many years in the jungle without seeing the face of another white man. The botanist of the expedition is Homer L. Shantz, of Washington. Shantz was selected .by the United States Department of Agriculture. For the first time in scientific history the motion picture will plav an important pact in the exploration of Africa. Motion pictures uf 'known and heretofore unknown forms of animal, insect, and reptile life, of races and tribes, will be brought to America.
