POLITICAL NOTES.

Mr V. Ashworth had a .splendid and largely-ai (ended meeting at' Hyde school last night. After his address the chairman expressed the opinion that there was nothing revolutionary in the Labour platform but sound and sane proposals. A motion of thanks and confidence was moved and carried unanimously. The seconder of the motion also remarked that the platform was sound and the reforms advocated very necessary. Mr dames Horn, the Liberal candidate is, in sporting language, " well into his stride " in the political contest for Wakatipu. He opened his election campaign at Ctown Terrace on Tuesday, 4th inst., when he addressed a large meeting in the school-

house. The chairman, Mr W. M'Kibbin, in his introductory remark* (says the Lake County Press) said it gave him great pleasure to state that any dealings he had with Mr Horn, and also what he had at all times hoard of him, he was a man of undoubted ability and honourable in his business dealings. The time had now come for the electors to choose a representative in place of their old and esteemed friend, Sir William Fraser, and it was foe them to judge if Mr Horn was tho most suitable person, Mr Horn, on rising to speak, was greeted with prolonged applause. In his opening remarks ho said that if Sir William Fraser had 1 again stood for Wakatipu, he would not have opposed him, as Sir William and himself were warm friends. Mr Horn spoke for an hour and three-quarters, and in a clear manner explained his views on the leading political questions. After answering a number of questions the following motion, proposed bv Mr Alfred Miller, seconded by Mr John Jenkins junr., was carried unanimously :—That Mr Horn be thanked for his address, and that this meeting is of opinion that he is a qualified person to represent the electorate in Parliament. Mr Horn also addressed meetings at Gibbston, Lower Shotover and Arthur's Point, where he was well received. A strong committee is being formed at Queenstown to work in his interest. The candidate is working his way in this direction and is advertised to speak at Earnseleugh on Tuesday next, 18th inst., and at EYuitlands the following evening, Wednesday I9fch. From there lie proceeds straight on to Roxburgh, addressing meetings en route at Shingle Creek and Coal Crook on Thursday 20th. He speaks at Roxburgh on Friday 21st, and at Ettrick and Millers Flat on Saturday 22nd.

Mr A. Ashworth, the Labour candidate for Wakatipu, addressed a large and representative gathering of electors (says our Chatto correspondent) in the school on the evening of Monday, November 3rd. Mr G. Asipiith occupied the chair. In the coarse of his remarks in introducing the candidate, the chairman referred to the splendid service rendered by Mr Ashworth on the occasion of the fire in the Alexandra coal mine, when he (Mr Ashworth) was largely : instrumental in saving the lives of several of the entombed miners. After a very forcible address, in which he placed the labour platform before his hearers- in a most convincing and instructive manner, the candidate was accorded a heaifty vote of thanjks'by the meeting. - ~ •
