PUBLIC MEETING.

At. a -public meeting held in • the j Town Hall on Monday evening, over which the Mayor (Mr A- Ashworth) presided, the following, resolutions were pinto the meeting and carried : Moved by the Mayor, and seconded by Mr Chas Weaver (member of the Vincent County Council)—-, "That this meeting of residents of Alexandra is of opinion that the Government has not made adequate' provision for soldiers and their dependents, and they respectfully urge the Government at an early date to bring down a more liberal scale of pensions to discharged soldiers, and also to make more adequate provision for the de- • pendents of soldiers who have j fallen or who are now on active service." Moved by Cr C. Murphy, and seconded by Mr W. Duncan — "That this meeting of residents of Alexandra is of opinion that the time has, arrived for the organisation of industry so that the re- j sources of the Dominion may be ; developed to their fullest capacity, and they urge the Government to : ; consider the advisability of intro- j ducing a system of national service." j Moved by Cr J. J. O'Kane, j seconded by Mr R- M'Carthy, that the following resolution be forwarded to all Borough and County Councils ; to the member for the district and j all members of Parliament in the ' Dominion—- " That this public meeting held under the auspices of the Alexandra Borough Council invite your i council to urge on the Govern- j nient the necessity of passing 1 legislation to give effect to the ! resolutions passed at this meeting." | [A full report of the meeting will appear in our next issue.]
