LORD FRENCH AND THE NEW SOLDIER.
LESS FEAR OF DEATH.Lord French recently opened portions of the Y.M.C.A. Shakespear Hut in Gower Street, including a lounge presented as a memorial to Lieutenant L. K. Tweedie, R.F.A., who was killed in action, by his mother, Mrs Alec Tweedie. He said he could not say how deeply he admired and. appreciated the splendid devotion which the women of England had shown during the war. He. was quite sure that when all came to be chronicled their work would shine' as one of the brightest pages of our national history. Many years ago, when he first joined the army, the only refuge practically that the soldier had was the canteen. It used to be quito a common thing for an old soldier to sell his dinner to a recruit and buy beer with the proceeds. In the few years before the war the change manifested itself in a most remarkable manner, especially with regard to the diminution of crime. It was during the eighteen months that he was Commander-in-Chief in France that he saw really what those institutions had done for the soldier. This war had demanded more in the way of nerve and, courage than any in the past, and one could not help thinking that the magnificent courage which had been shown was to be traced .to the work of institutions like the Y.M.C.A. It had been said that men did not fear death now as they used to. He believed that there were things they feared very much more. Their whole spiritual and ideal side had been developed, and the valour, courage, and pluck they had shown in this war was an example of it.
