The Herald. Alexandra, Wednesday, Dec. 2,1908.
Railway excursion fares in connection with Xmas and New Year holidays are advertised in this issue. Applications are invited in this issue for the position of secretary to the Crewe ' Gold Dredging Company. A meeting of the Alexandra Jockey Club will be. held in the Criterion Hotel this evening, When a full attendance of members is requested. , / ,•- J We hear that in all probability Dr Chappie will visit the Tuapeka electorate at an early date and deliver a series of lectures _ at the different centres,
Several cases of plural voting in connection with the Westland election have been discovered, and prosecutions will follow in due course. The same prevails in Dunedin North. We understand that Mr Hickey, who figured so prominently in the now famous Blackball strike, will deliver an address at Alexandra, on behalf of the Miners' Federation, on Tuesday evening next. Order yoilr summer drinks* from Mr F. Nieper, Alexandra. Manufactured by Thorn son and Co., of Dunedin, these cordials and waters are unsurpassed. Customers can obtain a supply of icj during the holidays ■ Mr Fache sold the privileges of the Vincent Jockey Club at Ophir on Thursday list, when they were knocked down as follows *—Booth, Mr B. Flannery, £69 ; refreshment booth, Mr G. M'Cluskey, ,£l6 10s ; fruit stall, Mr F. Nieper, £ld j race books, Dunstan Times, £d. On Saturday nest Mr L. Ryan will sell by auction the privileges in connection with the j forthcoming meeting of the Alexandra Jockey Club, and at the same time will offer for sale horses, carts, and other articles.,, 'For the race meeting excellent entries have been received, and all that is required to make the meeting a success is fine weather. Given this the purchasers of the various privileges should be well rewarded for, their outlay. .
.. Q*? r , rea ? e f s will see by the advertisraent in this issue ; that/Mr Fred. Arthur, representmg.Messers J ..and J Arthur, will soon be in our district with the latest goods and patterns of styh s h suitings. Their goods are well known and they deservedly do a big business, bee advertisement for-dates. The contract for cutting thie %ater race in connection with the local borough's proposed water works has been let to Mr G. M} £ wn V vThe successful tenderer has had considerable experience in work of this description, and it is safe to predict that the works win be completed in a masterly manner, lenders are now.being called for the construction of the dam. T* Mr James Horn, of . Bannockburn, has purchased thestock of B;Naylor Ltd., Clyde at; a very heavy discount, and-is now offering to thepubhc the whole stock at greatly reduced prices. The stock includes drapery, boots, fancy goods, hardware, crockery, provisions, and everything that was formerly stocked by :,ibe old established firm; Should the support W A r l an T l T II after ■ * fair ttia *, tf is ti»e intention ?■WWorn? ornorn 0rn 'oestablish a remanent business in Clyde, and from what we team there is every probability that Mr Horn will permanently open in Clyde. Meantime a besiege has set in on the store at Clyde, and goods are being sold for cash at phenomenally low prices. ~ -, < A very successful 'social and! dance inaugurated by the young men of Springvale was held in the.schoolhouse on Friday, 20th ult., in aid of the school funds. The night was all that could be desired and visitors were present from the surrounding districts. The floor was inl perfect order for dancing and the miisic supplied was, excellent. About midnight refreshments kindly supplied by the ladies were handed round, and to " which ample justice was done. Songs were sung at intervals by Miss Deady, all of which were heartily encored. Mr A. Hannah carried out the duties of M.C. in his; usual efficient manner, and an enjoyable function terminated at an early hour. Two landlords in one hotel is something of a novel, coincidence in these parts, but at Matakanui such a state of affairs exists at the present 'time!' Some months ago the mortgagees of the Newtown Hotel sold under power-of;sale, and the purchasers at the sale agreed to lease the hotelto a man named Cameron. The former licensee (Mr J. D. M'Lennan) refused to transfer the license ™«T the new lessee " Tbe 'esult was that MLennan was but returned again. Police aid was next requisitioned, but even this failed to settle-matters. Cameron is in charge ofjhe bar arid billiard room, whilst M'Lennan retains possession of the dining room, bedrooms and stables.; This position remains unaltered, and M'Lennan intends to remain there until certain differences between him and the mortgagees are finally settled. In all probability it will be left to a Supreme Court judge to pour oil on the troubled waters and arrange a settlement. \ A most pleasing ceremony tobk\ place in the council chambers at Clyde oh Wednesday evening last, theoccasiqn being the presentation of a silver rose bowl suitably inscribed to Mrs Dickie by the members of the Vincent County Council. Mr James Horn (chairman), in making the presentation, referred in very complimentary terms to Mrs Dickie's many kindnesses at all seasons of the year, in providing table decorations for the county meetings. He paid a very high tribute to her skill as a horticulturist, and in concluding expressed the wish that Mrs Dickie would long be spared to fill the bowl with roses. All the councillors spoke In a similiar strain, ■- Cr Weavef remarking that the flowers grown" by Mrs 1 Decide were a ' clear proof of what could be done by irrigation. A number of ladies were present: by invitation, amongst whom were Mesdames Horn, Laidlaw, Smart, Weaver, Burmeister and Miss; Dickie. Apologies were also received from Mesdames* Kane andFlanfieryV- ; arid; ex-c6uncillors Butler and > Pitchesi W; Dickie suitably replied on behalf of/his wife, i and thanked the ladies for their courtesy in coming so far to do honor to Mrs Dickie.
Despite the announcement that the intended 1 trial of the new pumping plant, recently ! * erected on the .Alexandra Lead been postponed, a number of ofythe ;i district, including people from Bald Hill Flat r. and Clyde, turned out on Wednesday last to '£• witness the run. N Mr Payne, consulting engineer, very gratefully set the plant in j motion and gave a short run to the satisfaction ). of all present. Although the shutter was not • k raised to its full extent, the trial was sufficient , to convince onlookers of the practicability of ; the plant from an irrigation point of view, ll over three heads of water being pumped £ through continuously during the time the plant f: was running. The height from the river to % the bank is 55 feet, arid the water is pumped : through 200 feet of 15 inch piping. Qn ', account of the pulley belt being too harrow—. - due, we may say, to no fault of Mr Payne— I it has been found> necessary to add an ]'l: additional belt to assist in driving the pump, if and this is now being installed. "When?;; completed, it is the intention of Mr Payne to 4-' give a public trial, which will take place in I about a fortnight. Mr Scott, MfP,= for '■■ Tuapeka, has intimated his intention of being \ present, and the different irrigation leagues in the district will also be represented. We ,*. hope to announce in next issue the exact date f . of the trial. ■ ; '/'yhX ;";.'".' ,-''■.'■
