Volunteer Notes.

[By " Lyddite."] The shooting committee have arranged a match to be fired for to-day. and on Saturday, and the conditions are altogether different to any other event that has taken place on. the range. The target to bemused will be the " head and shoulders," and instead of disappearing in a given number of seconds it will travel a certain distance before being dropped, and the firer will have to use his judgment in allowing for the speed of the target. " The ranges are 200 yds and 300 yds, seven shots at each range. This class of shooting should be encouraged by all means, as it enables the men to become better trained for the service than shooting always at the stationery target. The shooting committee are to be commended for this innovation.

Correspondence is now being passed from this corps to the one in Cromwell in reference to a match to take place on November 9th (the King's Birthday), on the local range. During the summer months the wearing of the leggings will be discontinued on ordinary parades, but they must be worn on all Government parades. Volunteers will hail this news with satisfaction.

Last Thursday evening a creditable number turned out for parade; and although members had gone through the same drill with* satisfactory results during the past two months, yet on that evening, their work was no credit to them. Even in the simplest movement, the men went astray, and onlookers commented very strongly to members afterwards in reference to mistakes. The corps can do good work when it likes, but, to use a general expression, " it wasn't their night out" last Thursday.. No doubt the men will do better to-night, when SergtMajor Kibblewhite will be their mentor.
