Mr George Roberts, eldest son of Mr John Roberta, died last night, aged 32. He was very prominent in business circles and was president of the Otago A. and P. Association. He leaves a widow end one daughter. Flags at half-mast - were hoisted throughout the city and shipping today as a token of respect. 'Mr John Ewing to-day presented a petition to the Land Board from mining companies requesting the Board not to open jand on Run 223, Matakanui, for settlement on any system that would give occupiers of sections a claim for damages if the land was wanted tor mining purposes. Consideration was held over.—At the same meeting it was decided to offer for sale sections in the town of Manuherikia as soon as possible. The Alexandra Lead Dredging Co. has declared a dividend of Is per share, payable next Wednesday. By the collision of two French liners off Marseilles 120 lives were lost.

The Mississippi floods are abating, and St. Louis is now out of danger. Dr Sachs, a young Austrian doctor, who allowed himself to be inoculated with plague bacilli at Dr Koch's laboratory, is dead. Farther wreckage has been picked up on the New jSouth Wales coast, and it is feared some vessel has foundered. Several boats are still overdue.
