POETRY

DINNA GLOOM. Dinna gloom—whaferye do. The world is ower sad,; . Hide the greetin' o' yer heart, And let yer face be glad. Life, with never-sparing hand, Has strewn her path with ill And planted in yer heart desires She never can fulfil. It may be disappointment waits Upon the topmost height And yon will only climb to find A mist hidea all from sight. But dinna gloom—wh&t'er ye do, The work! is ower sad, Hide the greetin' o' yer heart. And let yer face be glad. —Maf.oabit Diha. NOBILITY. True worth is being, not seeming; In doing, each d*y that goes by, Some little good—not in the dreaming Of great things to do by-and-by. For whatever men say in blindness, And spite i f the fancies of youth, There's nothing so kingly as kindness, Aud nothing no royal as truth.

We get back our mete as we measure, We cannot do wrong and feel right; . Nor can we 'give pain and give pleas ure, For justice avenges each slight. The air for the wing of the sparrow. The bash for the robin and wren. Bat always the path that is narrow, And straight for the children of men. We cannot make bargains for blisses, Nor catch them like flies in nets; And sometimes the things our life misses Help mere than the things which it gets. For good lieth not in pursuing, * For gaining or great or of small, • But just in the doing, and doing. As we would be done by, is all. Through envy, through malice, through bating, Against the world early and late, No jot of our courage abating. < Our part is to work and to wait. A slightis the Btingof his trouble, Whoar winnings are his worth, - &£££ For he who is honest is noble, Whatever his fortunes or birth.
