SUNDAY SPORT.

TO THK EDITOR,

Sib,—Through the medium of your columns allow me, the liberty to voice the complaint of an indignant section of the community against the growing practice of our young men and youths in indulging in games of football and golf on Sundays. Football especially, as being the most objectionable to the public, seems to attract the larger crowd, and it is a weekly occurrence to see the flat near the cemetery turned into a football field for the time being, and from thirty to forty young men and lads indulging their sporting proclivities in this manly (?) sport. To the passer by on his road to the cemetery on a Sunday afternoon, and more especially to a lady, this practice is I most unpleasant, as the language indulged in on many occasions would assuredly cause the proverbial bullockdriver to blush ; ,and apart from this the spectacle on a quiet Sunday afternoon of a pack of half-clad howling youths racing after a leather ball is anything but agreeable. That many of our young men behave thus can only be ascribed to ignorance. No doubt undue addition to physical exercise has so promoted their bodily development as to crowd out the mental part of their system, and the feeling of the community should be one of commiseration for their consequent lack of common sense.

In any case, it is high time that this Sunday desecration was put a stop to, and I think that as the ground where they play is within the Borough the local council should take the matter up. Failing this the police may be able to put a stop to this most objectionable form of Sabbath-breaking.-—I am, «fec, Day of Best.
