(Reprinted from the Otago Daily Times, XStk December, 1902.) Messrs Stewart Dawson and Company, goldsmiths, jewellers, and English watch manufacturers, have now entered into possession of their promises at the corner of Princes and Dowling streets, Dunedin. The frontage to Princeß street is 25ft, and that to Dowling street 42ft, making a total of G7ft. The firm have not considered expense in making their Dunedin branch attractive, and of such magnitude and adaptability as to carry a display on lines similar to that carried by them in Melbourne and Sydney; and anyone who now sees these premises, with its magnificent display and ornatei fittings, will readily understand in what sense this establishment is a distinct acquisition to Dunedin. It is difficult to withstand such a charming display, and the magnificence of the shop is such as will attract a large custom. The interior has the appearance of a fairy palace. Harmony of colour, of design, and of arrangement is combined in a most pleasing manner not only in regard to the counter and show-cases, but to the walls and ceiling, which are subdivided into panels, with alcove cornice and wall frieze. This produces a fine effect. The decoration is in delicate tints, the whole picked out with best English gold-leaf in the most exquisite manner. The window fronts and interior show-cases are, all of American walnut, polished black, presenting a striking contrast to the glittering contents, which are seen to advantage, and may be inspected by intending purchasers with the greatest ease. The fronts are divided into uniform sections, each complete in itself, and i are airtight for the purpose of excluding dust or moisture. The general effect is most striking; polished marble facings cover the piers, and beneath ttie windows' a sill of similarly polished marble, with the name of the firm cut and gilded, extending the full length of the fronts. Both in Princes and Dowling streets the firm are enabled to effectively exhibit a most brilliant collection of goods, arranged with artistic taste. The sections of the windows are so arranged that they each contain a distinct class of goods. In one section are displayed rings of elegant and. varied designs and values, an array of gold watches and diamond jewellery in brooches, pendants, bracolets, etc. In others are sttown selections of ohoice articles in solid silver and silver-plated ware and costly jewels in morocco cases. A special feature is the fine disp ay of handsome clocks. The shelving is of plate glass, supported on silver-plated stands and brackets. The entrance door, in Princea street, is a work of art, the floral design, with the monogram of the firm in the centre-one of the most artistic pieces of work to be seen in the colony- AM the jewellery is of the latest type, being specially sent out from their London office. People of Otago have now an opportunity of inspecting and obtaining a class of goodß of a kind quite equal to that enjoyed by their friends and relatives at Home. The goods come, from their own and the finest workshops in the world. There is no middleman to intercept *ny of the benefits which should jointly be distributed between buyer and seller, and the prices in plain figures tell their tempting story. This must give Messrs Stewart Dawson and Company a powerful influence in trade in the city and surrounding districts. It is 30 years now since the firm was founded. As illustrating the progress made during the past few years, some additions to their business houses may be mentioned. In London new premises were acquired in Hatton Garden, the home of the wholesale and manufacturing jewellery and silverware trade. The business in Melbourne has grown to such an extent that Mr Dawson has secured one of the finest business corners in the colonies—namely, that of Nicholson's Buildings, at the corner of Collins and Swanston streets, consisting of eight shops and 24 offices. The Sydney premises are well known to all New Zealand visitors, and the West Australian establishment stands out as a prominent mark in Perth, being situated in Hay and Barrack streets. The Brisbane premises l were opened a few months ago, at the corner of Queen and Edward streets. In New Zaland entirely new premises have been built, fitted, and opened on the finest business corner in Wellington; also in High street, Christohuroh; and the last, but not the least, the premises in Dunedin under nofioe.
