9 July 1851 Friend, McLean, I have great affection for you, so please have affection for me also. I have been injured. I fell from the cart and ruined my hat on a rock. I am here without clothing, with only my skin and the coat you and the Governor gave me at Taranaki. So this is to ask you for a coat, and a red blanket, two, to keep me warm at Murihiku. I am thinking of you. That's all of this matter. I have not forgotten our earlier talk. If you go to take the money, when you return from Ahuriri, look me up when I return. Taiaroa is a guest, and you and I in December will go to Taranaki to talk of land. Now, Waiwakaiho, Te Hua, Mangati, Waitaha, Mangoraha, and Waiongana, these lands are to be given to you and the Governor. That is all.
