19 December 1848 From Otaraia, written to Kemp Sir, We have this to say to you. We have twice [requested?] to see you and to talk to you about our land. Sir, listen, we will not give over our land to you and the Governor, and even though the people of Wairarapa call for the land to be taken, it will not be given over. Don't listen to their statements or agree to their proposal, it is not right. Even though the boundary lines have been proclaimed to you, well, listen, Tauhe[re]nikau, Mataraua, Parinu[i]okuaka, Waingawa, Pukaka, Te Kotukutuku, Rangitumau, Parae, Tamaki, Te Kapurangi, Kumurau, Tuhaumi, Wareama - these lands will not be given over to you, never; we will continue to retain them all. It will remain that we will hold on to the three hundred [acres?] of land, it will be seen that it has not been all taken in, but rather, that there are many many chiefs who are holding on to the land. The boundary is at Otuwareanga and it strikes out to Aorangi and there is Tuakipuku; within Wairarapa there is Paporoporo on that side, and right out to Paeotumokai; that will not be given over, no, it is for our grandchildren, for our descendants, for our children. Listen, you Pakeha, it will not be given over. From me, from Hamuera Pakaiahi, and from Te Rahui, Namana and Rawiri This letter from Hurunuiorangi to Kemp and Bell is to inform you of the intention of the people not to give over the land to you and Governor Grey. [Note following] 'Natives of the Kaikokirikiri with reference to the selling of the land. Oppose. 19th Dec. 1848.'
