2 September 1851 To our good friend, the Governor Friend, Governor, We have this to say to you. We have called for payment for ships at anchor. But it is for you to decide on the right or wrong of our demand for payment for ships anchored in the river. Now, another matter for you. The Queen [a ship?] which was built at Turanga, we've called for payment for it, but the Pakeha said that was arrogant, and so we write to you for you to sort out what is right and what is wrong, the practice for the Pakeha and Maori of this settlement. Friend, be kind to the newcomers in this settlement of Turanga. We learned from the newspaper that you have made friends of the Maori in this land. Now, another thing we want to say to you is that at the berth for the ships, the pasture, branches and trees there should be paid for. Listen, we, the people of this settlement, are in trouble, in trouble over payment - the payment for the wheat, in trouble over the payment for the pigs, over payments. You should determine the correct payment. Friend, Governor, the Pakeha living amongst us experience no ill-treatment from us. We look after them very well. We are very, very good to them. But if we see some small transgression, then we will attack the Pakeha and demand that they be driven from their homes. But even if they are driven off we will like the Pakeha. This is why we ask you for an administrator for matters between Pakeha and Maori. That's the end. To Port Nicholson 'Signed' From Kahutia, Whata, Paratene Pototi, Te Karaka Ruru, Manahi [Note following] 'Turanga. Sept. 2, 1851. Kahutia and others asking payment for vessels lying in their river.'
