10 October 1845 I would like to be paid for my wheat at once. And if you do not agree then I will seize some of the cows as payment for my crops, for the potatoes, for the wheat, the fences, for the land, and for Captain King's flattery. Soon you Pakeha may be fighting me. But I will not be at fault, it will be your own, the Pakeha's. If the cows are let out onto my land, I will make a lot of trouble over this wrongdoing. I am very upset. How is there to be food for me and for you? Will he give me some for all the years ahead? He has lied to me. He said to me that he would pay me in one month. Now I have seen that month go by, and his promise has meant little. What I said to him was that my promise to him would be fulfilled, but with this matter we are all in trouble. It would be good for the cows to go back to your land in town. Friend, it remains as a fighting matter for us, when we should be living in peace. Now, according to our custom of old, well, if someone's pigs went eating another's taro or kumara, they would be killed, and it would be reason for a fight and so too the owner of the pigs would be beaten and killed. That's all I have to say to you. From Hoera Friend, I say to him to give me some payment for my wheat £2. You might speak to Captain King. [Note following] 'Oct.10 1845. 10 Oketopa 1845 E pai ana au kia utua taku witi aianei ano. Ehara i a au te he, no koutou ano te he, no nga Pakeha. Me aha koia he kai maku, ma koutou? Koia e homai tetahi maku mo nga tau katoa e haere ake nei? Kua korero teka ia ki au. Kua mea ia ki au, me utu au e ia i te marama kotahi. Mau e korero atu kia Kapene Kingi. [Letter is addressed] Ki a Makarini raua ko Kapene Kingi, Te Henui
