Wellington July 31 1864 My dear McLean The Manawatu Deed of Purchase has been returned to me duly executed by some 140 or 160 Men Women and Children - and the Claims of the Absentees appear to be duly admitted and guarded. I am pledged to pay the purchase money at akawa on the 18th of August, and in the Deed the parties appointed to receive and apportion the £12000 are Heriwanul, Hoani Te Muhana and Te Kaneke. I enclose letters to the Claimants you mention wig wig them, if they have Claims to be present at Rawkawa on the day fixed for mypaying the money to the Appointees. If they fail to prosecute their "claims" at the proper time, they must not blame me, or say that they had not fair warning. As there will be a great gathering, would it not be well to avail ourselves of the opportunity of clinching the purchase of the 40 Mile Bush. That impracticable old fool Herewanul, who last year insisted upon my purchasing the 40 Mile Bush, is now furious at John Mason's accepting another £50 Instalment upon it. But as no one will get what he deems his fair share of the £12000 - each will be disposed to sell other lands - I think therefore it would be well, if you could meet me at Rawkawa on the 10th. There will be a squabble over the money - but with this, they admit I have nothing whatever to do - the result will be that they will force each other to agree to the sale of other Blocks - Prospects of peace in the North improving - Now we are safe. Yours faithfully I. E. Featherston
