Taranaki February 5th 1872 My dear McLean I arrived here yesterday and have been busy all day with callers and Deputations. You will have to come here, there is a silly feeling prevalent that you are neglecting this place in favour of Wanganui and Wellington. I had this today from all quarters and of course have done my best to persuade the people you are working for them from Wanganui. It is no use however they are jealous and come here you must before long or there will be a wrong feeling prevail - I have been pretty busy enquiring as to position of the place and I can see plainly it is want of land is keeping back its advancement - I will do all I can to start roads and see what is doing with works now in progress - I left all pretty well finished up at Auckland, and the place and people satisfied - the starting the public works there has greatly altered public opinion but they are still bitter with Vogel about 2d stamps and corn duty. I purpose leaving here about Friday for Patea where I shall get Saturday and go on to Wanganui by Coach on Sunday - arriving there I hear Sunday night where I hope to meet you - As I shall see you so soon I will not add more - Waikato news continued very goodup to time I left Auckland - Mr. Parris has news here of intended arrival 200 Waikatos to a meeting Titokowaru has called - probably 20 nearer the number - Beautiful rain here last night showers still continuing - Always Yours very sincerely J.
