New Plymouth May 31st. 1851. Dear Sir, By the Resident Magistrate's order, I again forward the enclosed account, which please return at your earliest convenience. Yon will see by the Gazettes I posted yesterday that my brother is appointed Commissioner of Crown Lands. Therefore it is probable our mutilated township will undergo alteration very shortly. Look out for No. 82 of "Maori Messenger" dated May 8th. 1851, and let me know what you think of Sir George's handsome donation to those troublesome fellows. They continue to agitate the old question, and good will surely come of it after the masterly stroke your attention has been drawn to. In a letter to Matiu, the Kawana says he will be here in the Spring, when, I suppose, we may look for you likewise. By the way, White told Aubrey you were married to Miss Strong! Nairn has been turned out of his snuggery a little before the time agreed upon; and indirectly I hear the natives, encouraged by Manihere, since returned to Wellington, have not behaved well. They are now living near Hulke's Mill, in a small houes belonging to Brooking. On Tuesday last, the boundary question at Kaiwaru, was very satisfactorily arranged by Mr. C. Carrington going there with Honi and your humble servant. After we returned to town, Mr. Waka, of Waireka, went there and endeavoured to overthrow all that had been done. Is it not singular he should act in this way? I am expecting Rawiri and othere immediately to hand over the "tin". Received this money from the Sub-Treasurer, by the Governor's command. Send back the men's Abstracts as soon as possible, to make up for my remissness in not forwarding them before. Yours very faithfully (Signed) H. Halse. To:- D. McLean Esq.
