Left Auckland about 12 o. c. for the Thames; stood off and on at Okahu bay for Wi Hapiana who did not appear, proceeded with a favorable breeze and anchored off the Island of Pakihi where we remained all night. 14. Sailed from Pakihi and anchored in Taupo bay when Mr. McLean went on shore to meet the natives interested in the land now in course of survey at Piako. Wrote to Mr. Day acquainting him with the arrangement made with the chiefs connected with this land sailed in the afternoon and anchored in the Thames. 15. Daylight made sail and beat towards the head of the Thames 12 O.C. calm, in the evening anchored offwakatiwai. 3 large canoes from Taupo arrived. 16. Arrived off Pukorokoro landed and visited the hot springs, returned to the river where Mr. Ray and a large party of Ngati paoa assembled. Mr. McLean held a meeting with the chiefs which lasted about 2 hours, and settled satisfactorily the account for surveying the land at Piako Sunday 17. Sailed for Mr. Lanfear's at the mouth of the Thames R. Mr. McLean went on shore and employed two native pilots where we entered the river and reached as far as the Puriri where we stopped on account of the tide. Mr. Lanfear not at home. 18. Arrived at McCaskills and found that the chief Taraia who Mr. McL. wished to see was absent at Coromandel or the neighbouring settlements. 19. Employed two natives to pilot us down the river, proceeded with a favorable breeze and arrived at Putiki, Waiheke, about 10 O.C. P.M. Paid native 5s/- Mr. McL. borrowed 4s/- from Chorland. 20. Mr. McL. despatched James overland to a native settlement for the chief Paratene Puhata who arrived on board with two of his followers about 4 O. C. P.M. sailed from Putiki immediately afterwards with a good breeze for Coromandel, arrived off Huruhi Bay Waiheka and anchored on account of the weather. 21. Sailed from Waiheke about 7 A.M. anchored in Coromandel harbour about 12 o. c. Mr. McLean went on shore at Downings. Wind and rain all day. 22. Went on shore to McGregor's and held a meeting with several of the Patukirikiri natives in references to old land claims. Mr. Heaphy's absence at this particular time is most inconvenient Mr. McLean wrote to Heaphy requesting that he may return from Auckd. without delay with the original papers connected with Kevin's claim. Removed to Preeces point. 23. Went on shore and proceeded to Mr. Preece's in company with Mr. Lanfear. A number of natives arrived too late to enter into the question connected with Kevins claim at Taupiri, Hone came on board in the morning to offer land for sale which is to be surveyed provided the unanimous consent of the natives be obtained. Sunday wind and rain all day. 25. Mr. McLean on shore at Mr. Preeces, wind and rain all day. 26. Mr. McL. dispatched a messr. to Whangapaoa requesting to know whether the natives there are now prepared to have the land surveyed which they had offered to the Government in that district. Mr. McLean returned high wind and heavy rain through out the day. 27. Wind and rain all day. 28. Wind and rain all day removed from Mr. Preece's point to Downing bay in consequence of the boisterous weather.
