New Plymouth October 30th. 1850. Dear Sir, I have this moment heard that my brother is about to dispatch a special messenger, In consequence, I suppose, of yesterday's arrival. The ship "Eden" from Gravesend, 148 days, Captain Murdock, with fifty six passengers for this place, has arrived at Wauganui. Nothing, I hear, was known about the New Zealand Company, except that another vessel wat to follow shortly, with more people for thla settelment. I went to Poharama yesterday; and after the usual tedious nature of a native runanger, he consented to restore Henwood's horse to-morrow. Strange to say, Paratene, the leader of the tana, volunteered to go with me, and use his endeavours in the restoration of the horse. Warira was stubborn, and required a great deal of pressing before he gave way. The sore point is now, confession; and they will never believe but that Henwood, his man Connor, or John Loveridge, the younger, fired the shot; and under all the circumstances of the case, I cannot but think they are right. If Henwood did not inflict the wound, I am of opinion that he knows who did. Peter, the horse's name, is well, better than ever, and as fit as a rabbit. In haste, I am, Sir, Yours faithfully (Signed) H. Halse. To:- Donald McLean Esq. P.S. The July ship will bring the news about the Company.
