(referring to Te Kooti.) Sept. 20th. 1869 To:- Donald McLean Esq. Wellington News just received from McDonnell. The enemy is still close to Tokano in two pahs one 7 miles the other ten miles distant. Our scouting party can see them and their horses. McDonnell reports his force at 420, but the Hawke's Bay natives after the fight at Tauranga are afraid to attack. Those that are willing, the Wanganuis, Arawa, and Hopepi's people, are not sufficient. Both McDonnell and Herrick say Kooti is in a capital position to be attacked. Remainder of No. W Division have been written for to Runanga and go forward. I have your telegram saying Wanganuis are gone to Taupo. Can you tell when they left or about when they will be at Taupo. McDonnell's news confirms the murder of 4 Wanganuis' scouts by Te Kooti. A woman caught near Tokano says she saw 5 dead bodies of Te Kooti's people on return from Tauranga besides wounded. (Signed) Ormond.
