(referring to Te Kooti.) Sept. 20th. 1869 To:- Donald McLean Esq. Wellington News just received from McDonnell. The enemy is still close to Tokano in two pahs one 7 miles the other ten miles distant. Our scouting party can see them and their horses. McDonnell reports his force at 420, but the Hawke's Bay natives after the fight at Tauranga are afraid to attack. Those that are willing, the Wanganuis, Arawa, and Hopepi's people, are not sufficient. Both McDonnell and Herrick say Kooti is in a capital position to be attacked.
