Napier Oct. 7, 1868. Sir, I have just ascertained that there has been rather a disagreement between Tareha and Karatiana -- the latter pitched into Your Honor and Tareha for not having advised the Ministry to carry on the warfare agt. the exprisoners -- to what extent did the arguments proceed I do not know -- only that Karaitiana retd. to Pakowai and Renata went home to Omahu. In the face of this dispute a request has been sent to Karaitiana to enroll 15 natives for the Mounted Constabulary singling him out from the other tribes, a proceeding which is sure to increase their jealousy. Trusting Your Honor will not think I have too far trespassed upon your time -- I have the honor to be Sir Your most obt. svt. Geo. Thos. Fannin. Sup. Clerk. His Honor Donald McLean Esq. Wellington. One of the Petitions from the Settlers of Poverty Bay speaks very strongly against Col. Whitmore. I have marked it with a X so as to draw Your Honors particular attention to it.
