Protectors Office, Auckland, July 16, 1844. Sir, A Considerable degree of excitement both amongst Natives and Europeans, having occurred at New Plymouth, arising chiefly from disputes about Land, it is necessary that you should proceed without delay to the district for which you have been appointed Protector I have therefore the honor to request you will leave Auckland tomorrow the 17th and hasten with all possible despatch to Taranaki. Your first and most obvious duty will be to do all in your power to allay excitement of feeling, and to preserve the peace - and as time will not permit me to enter upon any explanation of the nature of your duties in detail I shall take the earliest opportunity of forwarding to you such general instructions as will I conceive be sufficient for your guidance on all ordinary cases. The Revd. J. Whiteley Wesleyan Missionary at Kawhia, at whose Station you will call, will be requested to accompany you to New Plymouth, and under that Gentlemans countenance and favor, your introduction to the natives will be of the most favorable character. You will also have the goodness to report as speedily as possible to me, the number of natives and the exvent of their cultivations in your district, especially with reference to the limits of the Companys claim - say from Ngamotu on the South, to Te Tamioa on the North. I have the honor to be, Sir, Your most Obedient Servant, George Clarke, Chief Pro. Aborigines.
