Wellington 19th. April 1848. Sir, In accordance with your Excellency's instructions that you should be furnished with schedules of the claim to land at Taranaki which have been reported on by letters from the Ngatiawa natives of that district, residing in this Province. I herewith have the honour to enclose, together with the schedules, translations of a few of the most important communications I have received in reference to that subject. No. 1 is from Rawinia, of Te Aro Pah, setting forth a claim for compensation for her interest in a small block of land, which is situated about nine miles from New Plymouth, a plan of which, annexed to the English translation of the Deed of Purchase, is herewith enclosed. I have informed the claimant that her case will be enquired into and considered at Taranaki. No, 2 is from Tupe of Waikanae, better known as "Tibby", offering lands for sale, on the North banks of the Waitara. I enclose his schedule, merely as it may remain as a record to shew your Excellency the desire evinced by this native to further the objects of the Government in acquiring land at Waitara. is from the same native, offering land for sale on the South banks of the Waitara. is applying for payment for land purchased at Taranaki, and having reference to former payments made by the New Zealand Company. is offering to sell the interest of Arama Karaka of Te Ara and others, in a block of land which they wish to dispose of at Taranaki, which lies to the South of the block alluded to in No. 1. is offering a large tract of land, North of the Waitara, towards Mokau, to the Government. is a Schedule of the claim of land offered by the Ngatitama and Ngatimutanga tribes. Owing to the migratice habits of the Ngatiawa natives within their respective limits as a tribe, a great difficulty arises in ascertaining the sub-division and position of the various lands referred to in their communications; so much so, that a minute enquiring into their individual rights, can only be instituted with success, on the spot where such claims exist. I have etc., etc., etc., (Signed) Donald McLean Inspector of Police. To:- His Excellency The Lieut. Governor.
