Napier 4 June 1863 Sir, Having relinquished the pay and emoluments attached to the office of Chief Land purchase Commissioner I have the honor to submit for the consideration of His Excellencys Govt. that I may be allowed such a sum for past services in lieu of pension as the Govt. may feel justified in awarding. It is unnecessary for me to enumerate the various difficult and arduous duties that I have been called upon to discharge for the last 19 years as those are already well known. I therefore rely with confidence upon such a recognition of my claims as the Govt. may deem me entitled to. In asking compensation for past services I should add that I am continually engaged in duties connected with the general Govt. for which I receive no remuneration those duties I am perfectly willing to perform, but as they involve heavy responsibility besides considerable pecuniary expences that I cannot recover. I am in hopes the Govt. will fully recognise the justice of my present application. I have the honor to be, Sir, Your most obt. servt. Donald McLean C. L. P. Comr.
