Wi Te Whero to Hon. Mr. McLean. Te Kohe Kohe. Waikato. August 23rd. 1870. Friend Mr. McLean. Salutations to you. Nini Kukutai has returned from his returned from his visit to the Kuiti; and he has given me an account of what took place. He tells me that one of the proposals made by Manuwhiri, during the time that I was last there has been set aside, I mean the appointment of a Meeting which was to take place on a time to be appointed. He even alluded to the Waiata (chant) which he intended to recite at that Meeting; and gave to it the name of ''He pou-Kia noho'', which signifies that peace was to be firmly established. It seems to me that the result (of Nini's visit) has been almost to do away with the present peaceable intentions. Another such visit, and confusion would follow; for he himself said to me on his way to the Kuiti ''that he would endeavour to dis- -suade them from coming down, until the Ngatitipa's had first of all gone up to Te Kangamutu.'' He also reqested us all to go together to the Kuiti, to attend the Lamentation for Te Kihirini; but I made him no reply, because I knew that this is not the real cause of this visit of theirs. What I said to you in my letter, ''that if I found the arrangements which had been agreed upon between us during my last visit, were being disregarded, and set aside, I should cease to visit the Kuiti. I said what I believed was the right thing to do. Even now, should you permit this contemplated visit or hui, for Te Kihirini, I shall then certainly stop going; for it is my opinion that disturbances and trouble will come out of this gathering. As for myself, I shall certainly not be present at the Meeting to which I now allude. Your Friend (Signed) Wi Te Whero. To:- Hon. Mr. McLean.
