THE SOLDIERS' MONUMENT.

Tho secretary of the Soldiers' Graves Committee has received tho following letter from Bis Excellency the Governor:— OhfißWiHiroh, December 12, 1893 Db\b T3IA-4tt reply ta your letter to Colonel BotW&E 6th December, I am desired by Hwfjxcellenoy the Governor to exprets his T*ry great regTet that he doos not bob any immediate prospect of his visiting Wanganui. Under the circum»tance» His Excellency will be very pleased to depute the unveiling of the monument to the officer commanding the district, Lieut.- Colonel Newall. I am, yours faithfully, R. S. Hunter Blair, Captain, A.D.C." This wbb in roply to a letter sent by the Committee to tho Governor, who promised lest December to unveil the monument if he came to Wanganut The Committee, however, feeling that the dedication to the public should not he longer delayed, sent the letter of Eth December, to which the above letter from the Government is a reply. We now learn thut Colonel Newall will unveil the monument between 7 and 8 p.m on Tuesday evening. The structure will be draped with flags, and the Volunteers, from the nature of the ground, will patado^ in two lines of a hollow square, on the sides next to the river and the band stand, thus leaving the front nnd the end with the inscription open to the publio. Captain Clapbam, we understand, will be in command. We have already given a long and detailed description of tha monument in onr columns, and we can now only recommend the people of Wanganui to attend the parade to see for themselves the really handsome and substantial memorial that now stands in the Domain. At this juncture it has been suggested that a fitting place for the Motua monument would bo the site of the smaller block house, where the old gaol for many years was located. Onr readers, who may attend on Tuesday evening, might look at tlis historic spot, and consider whether Dr. Featherstone's really beautiful monument would not bo much better seen and honoured there than in its present ont of the way place.

By District Orders in another column, en the occasion of the caremony of unveiling the Soldiers' Monuinpnt on Tuesday evening, the \Vanganui Naval Artillery, the members of the Alexandra Cavalry who may be within reacb, thejWanganui Rifl?3, the Wanganui Collegiate dchool Cadets, <>nd the Garrison Band will parado at 7 p.m., instead of 7.3Q, as previously ordered ; review order. Officers of other corps in the District and officers of the active and honorary and unattached list of malitia and volnnteers are invited to be present.
