Thomae Peacock ; he did bo with great pleasure ; hit knowledge of the requirements of the port fitted him well for this position ; he wai certain that if he were returned he would always be found at bis post. Mr K. Kngland seconded the nomination. There being no other candidate, the Returning Officer, declared Mr John Thomas Peacock duly elected. Mr Peacock came forward and thanked the electors for the high honor they had conferred upon him. He had never been ambitious to take part in the legislation of the colony, but he had been repeatedly asked to come forward. Had a local candidate come forward, he should not have done ao, but he thought he might be of some use to them. He would not promise to do anything in particular, for he might promise to carry out things which, on after reflection, he could not do. He thought their member ought to be unfettered. His poiioy on the Native question would be that, if no better plan were brought forward, he would go in strongly for separation. j In reply to a question, Mr Peacock said he whs 6trongly in favour of the Custom House being in Lyttelton. (Applause.) Mr Peacock proposed a vote of thanks to the Returning Officer, which was carried by acclamation.
