Local Intelligence.

Superintendenct. — It will be observed by our advertising columns that a requisition has been forwarded to Mr. H. R. Richmond, to allow himself to be nominated to fill the vacancy which will shortly occur in the above office, and that he has accepted it. We may mention that Mr. Good, who had intended to come forward and who no doubt would have been returned, was unable to do so in consequence of his name having been removed from the roll of electors without his knowledge.

Housi of Representatives.— The election of a member for the House of Representatives for the Town of New Plymouth took place yesterday at noon, when the Hon. Henry Sewell, AttorneyGeneral for the Colony, was returned without opposition.

Whirlwind.— We have been favored with the following interesting accotmfc from Mr. P. Bayley of a whirlwind which occurred at Wairau, a little south of Oakura, on Tuesday afternoon :—Returning from the survey at Hauranga in consequence of the heavy rain, which had set in, we arrived at the Waimoku stream at about quarter to 4, at which time it was thundering and lightening heavily. The tide was nearly low, but we suddenly noticed a large wave come rushing in which ran completely up to the high water mark, making us run for the bank. We proceeded along the beach until we had got about 200 yards on this .side of the Wairau stream, when the wind suddenly rose in violence, and looking towards the sea we saw the water all in commotion — to all appearances a whirlwind, and coming towards us. The Maoris commenced shouting, and we all ran for the high sand bank thinking to escape it, bub before we had got five yards it was on us in all its' fury. , Most of us were thrown down and rolled over and over. I was blown head over heels and in my progress the toe of one of my boots came in contact with a Maori's head, cutting it severely. I recollect nothing more, till I was brought up violently against the sand bonk, having been blown about 30 yards. T. Skinner, who was with us, was lifted completely on to the top of the bonk— about 12 feet high." The accuracy of this account is vouched for by Mr. N. Carrington, who! with Mr. G. Norlhcroft was some little distancd behind — near enough to see all that was going on^ but not near enough to take part in the perl foraance. "... - j Riflb Match.— A match between No. 9 (Capt.' Page's) and No. 2 (Capt. Corbett's) companies took place at Manutahi on Saturday last, the 13th instant, when the former won by Bixty points j they fired twenty rounds, five eachiat 150, 200, 250, and 300 yards. ftf t , . Lunatic. — Dr. Wodsworth, 70th Regiment, Principal Medical Officer here has called our attention to the fact that Mr. Houdin, the photo-, grapher (who has been recently discharged from Hospital), is a confirmed lnnatio and not safe to be at .large. It is to be hoped that the proper authorities will find an asylum for tho unfortunate man at once.
